TCU Represents SAI20 in Engagement Groups’ Meeting with President Lula
On November 11, the Brazilian Federal Court of Accounts (TCU) represented SAI20 at the G20 engagement groups meeting with the president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, in Brasilia. The topics presented by the engagement groups during the meeting will be submitted to the G20 Leaders' Summit, scheduled for November 18 and 19 in Rio de Janeiro. The SAI20 is the engagement group that gathers Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) from G20 member countries, led by the Brazilian Federal Court of Accounts.
The head of the General Secretariat of the Presidency, Márcio Macêdo, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, the Deputy Minister of Development, Industry, Trade, and Services, Márcio Elias Rosa, and the First Lady, Janja Lula da Silva, also participated. Representing the TCU, the Head of the Joint General Secretariat of External Control, Junnius Arifa, and the Advisor to the General Secretariat of the Presidency (SEGEPRES), Raisa Ojala, attended the meeting.
At the meeting, Minister Márcio Macêdo acknowledged SAI20's work and emphasized the role of the engagement group of SAIs in international discussions. In 2024, under Brazil's presidency, SAI20 focuses on fair and inclusive energetic transitions, climate finance, and the fight against hunger and poverty. Throughout the year, online technical sessions were carried out on the group's priority themes, such as the Senior Officials' Meeting in Brasília and the SAI20 Summit in Belém.
According to TCU official Junnius Arifa, the meeting highlights the importance of including civil society and other engagement groups in G20 discussions and amplifies the voice of supreme audit institutions (SAIs). "Our participation as SAI20 leaders in the engagement groups meeting with President Lula highlights our crucial role in promoting good governance and transparency across all levels.", he explained.
Raisa Ojala notes that the SAI20's work is multifaceted and they can contribute to various socially relevant issues. "The SAI20 is committed to strengthening transparency, accountability, and good governance in the G20 member countries. The meeting was an opportunity to reinforce the work of the SAIs in formulating policies that promote effective public management and public trust in government institutions," she stated.
