The Federal Court of Accounts (TCU) will represent Brazil at the SAI20 Summit, a forum that brings together Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) of the countries that make up the G20. The summit will be held next week in Indonesia, the current chair of the Group of Twenty.

The SAI20 (Supreme Audit Institution) was formed to encourage cooperative action among control institutions of the G20 countries with a view to monitoring public policies that seek economic recovery following the Covid-19 pandemic and the achievement of the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This forum brings together audit institutions that aim to contribute with their governments in the search for solutions to address both global and national risks.

Among the main topics that will be discussed at the SAI20 Summit are:

Post-pandemic economic recovery – To deal with the Covid-19 pandemic, governments needed to implement emergency public policies, making quick decisions that could lead to mismanagement or corruption. SAIs are essential to ensure governance and transparency in public accounts in emergency situations. The event will promote the discussion of how these institutions can contribute to the efforts for economic recovery following the pandemic.

Support for the SDGs – The Covid-19 pandemic has halted progress in the implementation of the SDGs. According to the UN 2021 Sustainable Development Goals Report, the pandemic has widened global inequality. Thus, strategies to encourage sustainable growth and an inclusive economy are necessary for nations to recover from the crisis and continue working towards the SDGs. The SAI20 Summit debates will address the role of SAIs for the effective implementation of the SDGs in their respective countries.

About the G20 - Founded in 1999, the group brings together the world's largest economies, including developed countries and emerging economies. It primarily serves as a forum for dialogue and international cooperation on economic and development issues.

The permanent members are Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States and the European Union. These countries account for 80% of the global GDP, 75% of exports, about 70% of foreign direct investment and 60% of the world's population.

The G20 chairmanship is rotated each year among its members, with the country holding the chairmanship collaborating with its predecessor and successor, also known as the Troika, to ensure continuity of the agenda. The current Troika members are Italy, Indonesia and India.

The G20’s motto during the Indonesian chairmanship is "Recover together, recover stronger”. The group's priorities are Global Health Architecture, Digital Transformation and Transition to Sustainable Energies.

Brazil will host the annual meeting of the G20 chairs and prime ministers in 2024. This is the first time that Brazil has been chosen to host a G20 leaders' summit since the group's foundation in 1999.
