The Brazilian Federal Court of Accounts (TCU) took over the presidency of the SAI20 in December 2023 – a significant milestone for the engagement group that brings together the Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) from the G20 member countries. The TCU has been making progress towards the goal of promoting public control discussions within the group.

During SAI20's opening meeting, the TCU gathered initial insights into the themes chosen for 2024: the fight against hunger and poverty and climate financing. The event represented the beginning of the discussion and deliberation process which will result in statements to be forwarded to the G20.

To address these issues, the Court organized two technical online sessions on the priority themes defined in SAI20's strategy. The first meeting, held on February 27, focused on the Fight Against Hunger and Poverty, while the second meeting, held on March 5, focused on Climate Financing. Both sessions were held at two different times to ensure global participation.

During the sessions, representatives of the SAI20 SAIs and guests debated the role of the institutions in the proposed topics, seeking to align with the G20 agenda in the context of global external control. The discussions not only provide a comprehensive view of the challenges faced but also show the way to achieve effective solutions through public policies and international collaboration.

The conclusions will be featured in a consolidated report, which will highlight the main statements, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) affected, identified challenges, relevant treaties, and the SAIs' recommendations for the G20. The report will serve as a valuable contribution to G20 discussions, providing insights based on evidence and practical experiences.

There are two in-person meetings scheduled for the first semester of the year in Brazil: the Senior Officials Meeting, scheduled to take place in April, in Brasília (DF), and the SAI20 Summit, scheduled to take place in June, in Belém (PA). The events will represent opportunities to consolidate the discussions' results and to determine concrete actions to be taken to face the global challenges addressed by the SAI20.
