Minister Augusto Nardes Visits Pretoria to Implement ClimateScanner
Minister Augusto Nardes, accompanied by expert technicians from the Brazilian Federal Court of Accounts (TCU), made an official visit to Pretoria, South Africa, to launch the implementation of ClimateScanner. This significant TCU initiative aims to audit climate actions worldwide.
The TCU technical team provided training to South African officials on ClimateScanner during the visit. This marks a significant milestone in the program's global expansion, with 127 countries already participating.
" The ClimateScanner initiative is indeed a significant step towards more effective global governance on climate change. It brings transparency and accountability to the commitments and actions of countries, as well as identifying gaps that need urgent attention,” stated the minister.
ClimateScanner was initiated in 2012 when Minister Augusto Nardes spearheaded coordinated audits in nine states of Brazil’s Legal Amazon, training over 1,200 technicians at the time. The methodology has since been adopted in Latin America, Portugal, and Spain, and was introduced at the United Nations for worldwide implementation.
" The ClimateScanner represents an important advancement in generating greater pressure and accountability on governments regarding climate change. It is an initiative that should be encouraged and expanded further,” concluded Nardes.
During his visit, Nardes also met with South African authorities to discuss opportunities for cooperation and exchange of experiences in environmental and climate auditing.
