TCU Initiates Audit at United Nations University in Tokyo

The Brazilian Federal Court of Accounts (TCU) has initiated an audit at the United Nations University (UNU), based in Tokyo, and with a global network of research institutes and centres. This audit is part of TCU’s mandate as a member of the UN Board of Auditors, reinforcing the Court’s role in overseeing international organizations and strengthening global cooperation in auditing and governance.

Aud_tokio2.jpgThe opening meeting led by Audit Supervisor Lucas Ferreira and Team Leader Vinícius Neves, took place on October 23. The audit team, comprised of Regivalder da Silva, Diones Rocha, and Jorge de Carvalho, is currently in Tokyo to assess UNU's financial and management practices. The team's goal is to ensure that UNU's resources are used efficiently and transparently, adhering to principles of good governance.

The audit team will also travel to Putrajaya, Malaysia, UNU's financial operations center, to further their investigation. This phase of the audit will delve deeper into the university's financial practices, specifically examining expenditure execution and the oversight of affiliated institutes.

Established in 1973, the United Nations University serves as a research and teaching institution to assist address global challenges such as climate change, sustainable development, food security, and global governance. The UNU collaborates closely with other UN agencies, governments, and academic institutions worldwide to produce relevant knowledge and foster evidence-based public policies.

TCU’s work will support UNU maximize the impact of its research by ensuring resources are used efficiently and transparently. This will contribute to upholding high standards of governance and transparency in UNU's operations, ultimately benefiting the international community. GB
