The INTOSAI Development Initiative (IDI) and other international organizations are hosting a series of three webinars on the independence of public institutions, focusing on common challenges faced by oversight bodies, audit institutions, and other organizations responsible for public accountability.
The meetings aim to broaden the debate on institutional independence as a systemic challenge that depends not only on legal safeguards but also on the political and institutional environment and the relationships among the various actors in the accountability system. The challenges to be addressed include the concentration of power in the executive branch, the politicization of governance, restrictions on civic space, and political influence over the appointment of institutional leaders and the allocation of resources.
Over three 90-minute online sessions, representatives of public institutions, international organizations, global networks, researchers, and development partners will discuss national experiences, ways to strengthen interinstitutional cooperation, and strategies to promote more independent and resilient accountability systems.
The program is organized into three meetings:
- October 14, 2026 Foundations of Institutional Independence: Discussion of challenges common to different public institutions and the role of coordination, public trust, and cooperation in strengthening institutional independence.
- October 28, 2026 Lessons from National Experiences: Presentation of practical experiences in safeguarding independence, including the role of other institutions and the political, legal, and institutional conditions that influence their work.
- November 18, 2026 Perspectives on the Future Agenda: Identification of priorities for strengthening accountability systems, with a focus on public policy, research, international cooperation, and technical assistance.
The series is organized by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the INTOSAI Development Initiative (IDI), the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), and the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD).
Registration covers all three sessions. Participants may attend one or more meetings. The access link will be sent to registered participants in advance.
