Brazilian Consul General in New York Discusses Community Challenges with TCU

The president of the Brazilian Federal Court of Accounts (TCU), Minister Vital do Rêgo, met on September 1 with Ambassador Adalnio Senna Ganem, Consul General in New York, to discuss the challenges facing the Brazilian community in the United States and opportunities for institutional cooperation. The discussion covered Brazil's 2026 elections and consular services.
According to the ambassador, the Consulate General of Brazil in New York is working to ensure that Brazilians can safely exercise their right to vote amid tensions surrounding immigration enforcement activities in the United States. The goal is to prevent concerns about encounters with immigration authorities from discouraging voters from going to the polls.
The situation is also affecting consular services. During the meeting, Ganem reported a significant increase in demand for assistance from Brazilians who have been deported. According to the ambassador, the number of cases handled by the Consulate has risen from approximately 30 per month during the Biden administration to around 80 per week today.
The meeting also covered cooperation and exchange initiatives. The ambassador presented cultural and academic projects developed by the Consulate General in New York and expressed interest in strengthening ties with Brazilian institutions. The discussion also addressed the importance of bringing society closer to the work carried out by public institutions.
According to TCU President Minister Vital do Rêgo, closer engagement with a range of institutions helps broaden dialogue and strengthen the role of government auditing in shaping and monitoring public policies.
