Workshop on Auditing Deforestation and Climate Change

The Brazilian Federal Court of Accounts (TCU) took part, from March 24 to 26, in the EFSUR (Supreme Audit Institutions of South American Countries) Coordinated Audit Planning and Capacity-Building Workshop on Deforestation and Climate Change, held in Asunción, Paraguay. The event was organized by the Office of the Comptroller General of Chile, with support from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Supreme Audit Institution of Paraguay.

The workshop focused on strengthening technical expertise of participating Supreme Audit Institutions and aligning approaches to national audits, marking a significant milestone in regional cooperation.

Participants from Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay discussed the challenges of delivering effective and coordinated oversight, with a view to improving transparency and efficiency in how countries address deforestation and climate change in South America.

TCU was represented by auditors Fernando Reis and Alexandre Machado, both from the Audit Department for Agriculture, Environmental Affairs and Sustainable Development.

The program also featured international experts, who shared technical insights into the links between deforestation and climate change. Among them were Pilar Moraga, from the University of Chile; Juan Ferrando, Forestry Officer at FAO for Latin America and the Caribbean; Pablo Honeyman, Senior Consultant at FAO Chile and National Coordinator of the REDD+ Forests Project; and Ángela Rodríguez, Anti-Corruption and Transparency Advisor at the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
