On the first day of the SAI20 Summit in Belém (PA), Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) from the G20 and other nations invited by the Federal Court of Accounts (TCU) expressed their support for the priority themes of the Brazilian presidency of the engagement group. This year, SAI20 is focusing its actions on addressing climate crisis, hunger, and poverty.

The heads of delegations from Germany, Angola, Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan, China, South Korea, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Ecuador, Guinea-Bissau, Indonesia, Maldives, Morocco, Poland, Portugal, and São Tomé and Príncipe presented each country's positions on the themes.

The leaders of SAI India and South Africa also highlighted their contributions and aspirations within the engagement group. Alongside Brazil, these institutions make up the SAI20 troika. Troika is a Russian word that means 'trio'.

In the context of SAI20, the troika brings together the current, previous, and next presidencies of the G20 engagement group. The countries that form the troika work in cooperation with each other to ensure the continuity of SAI20's agendas. In 2024, Brazil is working in collaboration with India, which was president in 2023, and South Africa, which will be president in 2025.

In his speech, the Auditor General of SAI India, Girish Chandra Murmu, recalled the priority themes of the previous presidencies of SAI20. In 2022, under the leadership of Indonesia, the group focused on global health architecture, digital transformation, and the transition to sustainable energy. In turn, in 2023, chaired by India, SAI20 addressed blue economy and the responsible use of artificial intelligence.

Murmu emphasized the importance of the SAI20 themes in 2024 – fighting the climate crisis, hunger, and poverty – as crucial for the planet. "The foundation of SAI20 lies in recognizing audit institutions' role in fostering efficiency, accountability, and transparency in public administration.  We are gathered to deliberate on critical issues, such as climate finance, inclusive energy transitions, and multidimensional poverty. We believe this is an opportunity to ensure effective use of resources allocated to initiatives addressing these challenges in our respective countries," he stated.

The Auditor General of SAI South Africa, Tsakani Maluleke, the next chair of SAI20, also stressed the importance of the collaborative action of the G20 engagement group. She further reinforced that SAIs have a role to play in meeting the expectations of citizens.

"SAIs are key actors in national and global accountability ecosystems, helping to ensure transparency, accountability, and institutional integrity. In SAI20, we have successfully formed a community that shares experience and helps each other.  Together, we can drive positive change in the world, ensuring that no one is left behind," she said.
